Since 2001 we have brought together in a single studio all the expertise that the restoration of historic heritage requires: architecture, structures, systems and safety.
SPIRA — Servizi di Progettazione Integrata per il Restauro Architettonico — was founded in Florence in 2001, from the meeting of Giuseppe Cruciani Fabozzi and Massimo Marrani after years of professional collaboration. In 2004 the studio became SPIRA S.r.l., an engineering company able to manage the entire process of recovering architectural heritage.
In more than twenty-five years of public and private construction sites, we have gained experience managing the technical and administrative aspects of every project: from safety planning to schedule management, including the aspects related to safety planning and construction timeline management.
We think of every building as a layered document, and we work to recognise and preserve the transformations that have shaped its history.
Before working on a building, we read it in its materiality and its structure, recognising the traces of the transformations it has undergone over time. For us, restoring does not mean erasing these signs to return to some hypothetical “original” form: a historic building has no single moment to return to, but a history made of successive layers, each one part of its value.
For the same reason, we do not treat a building as a simple real-estate asset to be converted. Instead, we seek the right relationship between old and new: interventions that are recognisable and compatible, able to meet today’s functional needs without compromising the building’s identity. Contemporary additions accompany the building and establish a dialogue with it — not a substitution — and remain, as far as possible, reversible, so as not to close the door on future interpretations.
